A notable highlight of the workshop was a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring serial entrepreneurs and scientific founders: Prof Chwee Teck (C.T.) Lim, Prof Eng Eong Ooi, and Dr Sebastian Schäfer. The panel delved into the intricacies of biotech entrepreneurship, emphasizing the transformative power of resilience and adaptability.
Prof Ooi Eng Eong, co-founder of Tychan and co-director of the Viral Research and Experimental Medicine Centre, challenged the conventional notion of biotech failures. "The shuttering of a biotech is not a failure for the entrepreneur involved – in fact, that experience is a highly valuable one, making the scientist more attractive to the next biotech," he shared.
Dr Schäfer highlighted the advantages of smaller biotech firms, noting that their size allows for flexibility, efficient resource allocation to product development, and the ability to maintain a long runway at minimal costs. He emphasized that growth and expansion are not inherently positive outcomes.
Prof Lim reflected on the evolving entrepreneurial landscape in Singapore, acknowledging the significant progress made in the last two decades. "Singapore has come a long way towards encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurs. Success stories and the presence of mentors who have navigated similar journeys are crucial to inspire and showcase what is possible," he remarked.
The workshop's success can be attributed to the invaluable contributions of all participants. The insights shared during the event play a pivotal role in enhancing the HHP I&E ecosystem, contributing to the continued growth and success of biomedical innovation in Singapore.
The Biomedical Sciences Industry Partnership Office expresses its gratitude to everyone involved, extending appreciation for their commitment to advancing the field and inspiring the next generation of biotech entrepreneurs.
