MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), a leader in life sciences innovation, has joined forces with the National Omics Center (NOC) under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) to leverage advanced sequencing technologies for the conservation of Thailand’s vital mangrove ecosystems. This collaborative effort aims to address environmental challenges threatening mangroves, which serve as critical coastal protectors and support the livelihoods of local communities.
For centuries, mangroves have safeguarded Thailand’s coastlines, preventing erosion, mitigating storm surges, and nurturing marine biodiversity. However, more than 60% of the country’s mangroves have been lost to deforestation and urban expansion over the past five decades, leaving communities increasingly vulnerable to environmental threats.
Dr. Jeremy Shearman, Senior Researcher at NOC, highlighted the stakes:
“Mangroves are essential for coastal regions and estuaries, protecting against erosion and storm damage while serving as nurseries for marine life. Understanding their genetic diversity is vital for preserving these ecosystems.”
MGI’s DNBSEQ-G400RS sequencer is at the core of this initiative, enabling researchers to examine the genetic diversity of mangroves with unprecedented precision. Using Restriction-site Associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), the project is building a reference genome database for 15 mangrove species in Thailand and identifying genetic markers critical for conservation planning.
“This research focuses on sequencing genomes to create reference databases and measure genetic variation across Thailand’s mangrove populations,” said Dr. Wirulda Pootakham, Director of NOC.
In addition to RAD-seq, MGI’s RNA sequencing technology provides insights into how mangroves adapt to high-sodium environments, revealing resilience mechanisms essential for their survival. Together, these techniques enable a comprehensive understanding of mangrove biodiversity, adaptability, and ecological importance.
“MGI’s platform delivers high-quality data, reducing uncertainties in our research and allowing us to achieve impactful biodiversity outcomes,” shared Ms. Sonicha U-thoomporn, Research Assistant at NOC.
This partnership exemplifies MGI’s commitment to sustainable development and ecological protection. Beyond mangroves, MGI collaborates with other Southeast Asian nations, such as Indonesia, to advance biodiversity research, addressing critical environmental challenges across the region.
“We are proud to support scientific initiatives in Thailand that enhance ecosystem conservation and benefit local communities,” said Duncan Yu, President of MGI. “Our mission is to harness cutting-edge life science tools to drive sustainable development and environmental protection globally.”
This initiative not only safeguards Thailand’s natural heritage but also provides a roadmap for using genomics to protect ecosystems and promote resilience in a rapidly changing world.
